This project was part of a multi-phased renovation to the existing lab spaces in UMass’ Textile Building. This phase of the project included a pair of research labs (for both “wet” and “dry” experiments) and a portion of the surrounding support spaces, for all phases of the project.

During the design phase of the project careful consideration had to be given when planning the spaces in order to avoid redundant or unnecessary work across multiple phases.

This project was part of a multi-phased renovation to the existing lab spaces in Umass’ Textile Building. This phase of the project included a pair of teaching labs (for both “wet” and “dry” experiments) and a portion of the surrounding support spaces, for both current and future use. Due to the phased nature of the project careful consideration had to be given when planning the spaces in order to avoid redundant or unnecessary work in future phases. Additionally the support spaces were planned in order to allow use by both the current and future labs planned for the space.

Civitects was retained by the University to transform existing office spaces into a new Computational Science Lab and conference room on the first floor of the Textile Building. By eliminating the existing office spaces, Civitects was able to develop an open plan for the lab and incorporate new computer workstations and a lounge area. Work included the construction of new partitions, ceiling and floor finishes, an overhead projector, and tackable wall surfaces in the corridor immediately outside the space. Improved security measures were considered and new doors were equipped with access control. Existing electrical, HVAC, and plumbing systems were also modified for the new lab.
